Arco
The Police Dog

Arco, a twelve year old Belgium Malinois, that for ten years has patrolled the dtreets of Harrodsburg, was euthanized Thursday, July 3, 2008, after a series of ongoing health problems. Arco was born in Holland, and before he was two years old he received his K.N.P.V. (Dutch Royal Police) certification, which is a report card of all the areas in which he was successfully trained. He then was sent to the States where he arrived at Cross Creek Training Center in Edgefield, South Carolina

There, he was partnered and trained with handlers of the Harrodbsurg Police Department. Arco was a full service dog trained in three different areas, which included tracking, narcotics detection, and criminal apprehension. K-9s live with their handlers and work together exclusively in their never-ending training and patrol duties. The bond that develops is a very deep one. They are not pets, but working animals that you get to know, and rely on to protect you.

Arco was a very devoted and dutiful dog, who when first turned out of his kennel, would circle around his police car, waiting for the door to open, so he could go to work. He truly loved his work and all the people at the police department. Arco had so much drive; there was no doubt he was born to be a police dog. Yet, he was the kind of dog that, when work was over, he would come to you to be petter. He was truly one of Harrodsburg's finest in every way, and also a big part of my family. He proved himself many times.

A K-9 handler endures long hours. When everyone else's shift is over, there is still a dog to feed, a kennel to clean, and a true friend to brush and clean. He was the perfect partner. He was always there for me. He followed orders on command, didn't talk back, and was a trustworthy companion I could always count on. I will miss all of these wonderful qualities, but most of all I will miss the sparkle in Arco's eyes looking up to me, with his ears alert, eager to go to work. May you rest in peace.

"Guardians Of The Night"

Trust in me my friend for I am
your comrade. I will protect you
with my last breath. When all others
have left you and the loneliness of the night
closes in, I will be at your side.

Together we will conquer all obstacles.
And search out those who might wish harm
to others. All I ask of you is compassion, the caring
touch of your hands. It is for you that I will
unselfishly give my life and spend my nights
unrested. Although our days together may be
marked by the passing of the seasons Know that
each day at your side is my reward.

My days are measured by the coming and going
of your footsteps. I anticipate them at every opening
of the door. You are the voice of caring when I
am ill. The voice of authority when I've done wrong.

Do not chastise me unduly for I am your right arm,
the sword at your side. I attempt to do only what
you bid of me. I seek only to please you and
remain in your favor.

Together you and i shall experience
a bond only others like us will understand.
When outsiders see us together their envy
will be measured by their disdain.

I will quietly listen to you and pass no judgement,
nor will your spoken words be repeated. I will
remain ever silent, ever vigilant, ever loyal.
And when our time together is done and you
move on in the world, remember me with kind
thoughts and tales, for a time we were unbeatable,
nothing passed among us undetected.

If we should meet again on another street i will gladly
take up your fight, I am a Police Working Dog
and together We are the
guardians of the night.
